Offered here is an interesting 1864 Confederate medical furlough issued to Private Adolphus A. Alexander of the 20th Alabama Infantry, and signed by Confederate Surgeon Nathaniel Friend. It reads:

Board Medical Examiners,
Greenesboro’, GA. August 25th 1864.

Sir:
You are notified that a furlough has this day been granted to A. Alexander, a Private of your command for the period of Sixty days.

To Capt. Com’dg. Co. D 20th Ala. Regt., Pettpus’ Brigade, Army of Tenn.

N. Friend, Surg. P.A.C.S.
Sr. Member Medical Board

The furlough measures about 7 1/8” x 3 1/4” and is somewhat poor condition with folded corners and small holes. Creased where originally folded, but otherwise in good shape.
