Item No. 5353149

A very interesting true copy of a November 1862 special order issued from Nashville by General Alexander M. McCook, commanding the Right Wing of the 14th Corps (Army of the Cumberland). The order names officers to be assembled for a general court martial, to include the trial of Sergeant Edward P. VanValkenburgh of the 1st Michigan Engineers & Mechanics. The order names fourteen officers from Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio, and Pennsylvania to be detailed to the court. It was written out and signed for McCook by Brevet Brigadier General John A. Campbell, assistant adjutant general on McCook’s staff. It was also signed as a true copy by Captain Alexander C. McClung of the 88th Illinois, who was Judge Advocate. The order reads:

While the document does not disclose the results of the case against ValValkenburgh, records indicate he was discharged in April 1863 at Murphreesboro. He had evidently been commissioned a month earlier as a lieutenant in the 107th New York, serving through the end of the war.

The order was written on a stationery sheet measuring about 7 3/4” x 12 1/4” and is in excellent condition as shown. Very few signs of age, with some minor toning in the margin and creases where it was originally folded.
