Item No. SQ6838529

Offered here is an interesting 1865 pass with the attractive heading, "HEAD QUARTERS SECOND ARMY CORPS," written just days before Lee's surrender at Appomattox. Written before the end of the siege of Petersburg, the pass authorized Samuel D Hayes, regimental quartermaster for the 110th Pennsylvania Volunteers, to travel to the Army of the Potomac's supply and administrative headquarters at City Point, Virginia. The date is listed as March 24, the day before the attack on Fort Stedman, one of the final attacks of the war in which the 110th was engaged. It is signed by an unidentified officer on the staff of Andrew Humphreys, commander of the 2nd Army Corps at that time.

The pass measures about 5 1/2” x 5” and is good condition. Minor foxing and toning. Light wear to edges and corners (with the obvious section missing from the upper-left corner). Creased where originally folded.
