Item No. 1183968

An interesting January 1863 Confederate rent voucher to Mary Rhodes of New Market for $5, for “One Months use of Room as Office for Q. Master.” Miller added this additional information ahead of his signature: “This room was used in setting up my Company belonging to the Ashby Command.” Miller signed once again at the bottom, along with Mary Rhodes (who made only a mark) and Private James H. French, who served in the quartermaster’s department of the 7th Virginia Cavalry. Interestingly, Turner Ashby died in June 1862, yet the moniker “Ashby’s Command” remained in use seven months after his death.

The partially preprinted/partially written document measures about 7 1/4” x 9 1/2” and is in excellent condition, with only minor signs of wear and creases where it was originally folded.
