Item No. 4328521

A CDV of explorer and Union Navy Commodore Charles Wilkes in civilian clothing. Born in 1798, Wilkes led the United States Exploring Expedition, 1838-1842 and commanded the ship in the Trent Affair in 1861, where he attacked a Royal Mail Ship, almost leading to war between the US and the United Kingdom. His behavior led to two convictions by court-martial, one stemming from the massacre of almost eighty Fijians on Malolo in 1840.

The CDV is in excellent condition and measures about 2 1/2” x 4”. On the reverse is the early backmark of Edward Anthony, distributor of the Mathew Brady image.
