Item No. SQ5397272

Offered here is an interesting 1863 document signed by David McCartney, Provost Marshal for the 16th District of Ohio in Barnesville. Written to an unknown "Sir," the circular directs that "As soon as you are through with the enrollment of your district you will please report by letter to this office." The addressee was to compile lists of the number of able-bodied men, enlisted soldiers, and deserters from the various townships in the district. This was surely in response to the Enrollment Act of 1863, the controversial draft act that was intended to provide fresh manpower to the Union armies.

As a reminder that documents like these were created by real people, there are some pretty clear ink fingerprints along the edges.

The order was written upon a stationery sheet of paper measuring about 8" x 12 1/2". The paper is in good sturdy condition, not stiff, and not delicate. Very little wear to edges and corners. Creases where originally folded. There is an old tape repair to a one-inch portion of a fold on the reverse.
