Item No. 1972168

A very nice September 1864 letter with the endorsement autograph of Union General Nelson A. Miles. Written by Major George Washington Scott, commanding the 61st New York, the letter praised the accomplishments of Captain Frederick Cochen, who had recently been discharged due to poor health. It reads:

Hd Q 61 Reg’t N.Y.V.
Front of Petersburgh Va Sept 22d 1864

I take pleasure in acknowledging the worth of Capt. Fred. Cochen late of my Regiment, as a man and officer. During his term of service in the Reg’t, in action, and in camp, he has proved himself a thorough soldier, giving general satisfaction to all his officers.

Owing to continued ill health he did resign, being honorably discharged the service.
Geo W Scott
Maj comdg Reg’t

Capt. Fred’k Cochen
late 61st N.Y.V.

On the reverse is Mile’s signature, with a note reminding all that he, too, was a former officer in the 61st:

Hd Q 1st Div 2d AC
Oct 13 1864

I take pleasure in approving this commendation.
Nelson A. Miles
Brig Gen U.S.V.
late C. O.
61 N.Y.V.

The letter and endorsement were written on the first and last page of a four-page stationery sheet measuring about 7 3/4” x 9 3/4”. Minor foxing and toning throughout. Creased where originally folded. There are tape repairs on the empty interior pages where the document had separated at the folds, but sturdy now.
