Item No. 8302966

A fascinating Mexican War letter written by William Whann Mackall, then serving as an adjutant with the 8th US Infantry, but who would later serve as a brigadier general in the Confederacy. In the letter, Mackall writes to an unidentified major to recommend promotion for a Sergeant Major Fisk, in which Mackall reiterates the recommendation of the regiment’s unnamed colonel, presumably William J. Worth. The letter reads:

Head Quarters 1st Division
Mx. Sep. 23d 1847

Major:
I have the honor to inform you that the protest of the officers of the 8th Regt. has been forwarded to Genl. 1st Div. with the following Endorsement, viz: ‘Altho this paper is highly exceptionable in its language & tone, it is respectfully submitted to the consideration of Genl-in-Chief, reiterating my own recommendation, in behalf of Sergt. Major Fisk, as Col. of the 8th Infy. This non-comd. officer is extremely well educate, of suitable age, with the manners of a gentleman. He was wounded at the Resaca [de la Palma], and altho he may not have surpassed other non-comd. officers, attaining, equal, as sergeant Major, he was named from of many, having the advantage of education and fitness. I am aware that he has occasionally indulged in a vice too common in the Army, but having closely observed this non-comd. officer, I have felt assured that in his case, indulgences arose from his false and unnatural position. I not only reiterate my recommendation, but request that he may be attached to the 8th Regt. of which I have the honor to be Colonel.”

I am Sir
Very Resply
Yr Obt. Svt.
W. W. Mackall
A. A. Genl.

The letter measures about 8 1/4” x 10 1/2” and is in very good condition. Light wear to edges and corners. Creased where originally folded. Light foxing and toning.
