April 1865 Letter Signed by General John Schofield, Commanding Army of the Ohio in Goldsboro, North Carolina

Item No. 3582792

A nice April 8, 1865 letter signed by Union General John Schofield, commander of the Army of the Ohio. Then operating in cooperation with Sherman in North Carolina, Schofield’s letter was written to Brigadier General Edward D. Townsend in Washington. It reads:

Head Qrs. Dept. of North Carolina
Army of the Ohio
Goldsboro N.C. April 8 1865.

Brig. Genl E.D. Townsend
Asst. Adjt. General
Washington, D.C.

I have the honor to transmit herewith copies of the Special Field Orders issued from these Head Quarters during the month of March 1865.

I am, General
Very Respectfully
Your Obdt Servt.
John Schofield
Major General

While the letter itself was written out by a staffer, the signature is Schofield’s. The letter measures about 7 3/4” x 9 1/2” and is in excellent condition. Mounted around the edges only with a slightly heavier paper, presumably an effort to protect the paper’s edges and corners. Minor toning. Creased where originally folded.
