Item No. SQ0710572

Offered here is an interesting Civil War Confederate officer’s letter written from Richmond, Virginia. It is dated June 22. No year was given, but I suspect it is 1862, as thousands of troops were concentrating at Richmond at this time. The author wrote about his arrival in Richmond and that he was staying at the home of Confederate Quartermaster General Abraham C. MyersTimes of London journalist Francis C. Lawley was staying there with him, he wrote, and provided him with several uniform articles.

The author’s identity is a mystery, but the company he kept suggests he was of some stature, perhaps at least a field grade officer. I suspect he may be a South Carolinian, as the two officers mentioned in the letter, Myers and (likely) Major James DuGue Ferguson (of Fitzhugh Lee’s staff), were both South Carolinians. Further research could result in an ID on the author.

The letter reads:

June 22d

I reached Richmond this morning. Lawlie [Lawley] offers to forward this but it must be closed in a few moments. I have just learned that your box sent through Maj Ferguson is in Richmond; I will send for it to-morrow & in my next will tell you of its contents. What pleasure I will have in opening what you have packed. Lawlie brought me boots, gauntletts, gloves, handkerchiefs, & socks so with yours & his I will be well supplied. I have not had time to talk to L about you; I must get him alone some night, as we are staying together at Mr Myers. Farewell.

The letter was written on a paper fragment measuring about 8 1/2” x 6 1/4”. It is in excellent condition with little toning, little wear to edges and corners, and creases where originally folded.
