1862 Confederate Order - No Reward for Capture of Deserters - Pocotaligo, South Carolina

199.99

Item No. SQ3101150

Offered here is an interesting Confederate Civil War document. It is an extract from Special Orders No. 40, in which the War Department in Richmond directed that no further rewards would be given for the capture of deserters. It is staff-signed by John Withers and was sent to the 4th Military District of South Carolina and signed for by John R. Waddy, A.A.G. for the district (which I believe was under Maxcy Gregg at the time). The order reads:

Adjt & Insp Genls Office
Richmond Febry 26th 1862

Special Orders No. 46.

XIV. Hereafter no reward will be paid for the capture of deserters.

By Command of the Secretary of War
(signed) Jno Withers
Asst. Adjt. Genl

Hd Qrs 4th Mil. Dist
Pocotaligo March 18th 1862

The order measures about 7 3/4" x 9 3/4". Excellent condition. Very light toning along edges. Creases at original folds. Small tape repairs on reverse at folds.
