Item No. SQ5413363

Offered here is an interesting 1863 order from Captain Israel R Sealy of the 47th New York Volunteers and adjutant to General Quincy Gillmore, directing that Private William G. Newberry of the 52nd Pennsylvania be "detailed for duty as night watchman on the Military Telegraph line, and will report at once to the Chief Operator at these Head Quarters" (Department of the South HQ on Folly Island near Charleston, South Carolina). There is an additional signature of Lieutenant John H. McCoy of the 104th Pennsylvania, a staff officer in Private Newberry's brigade.

The order was written upon a stationery sheet measuring about 7 3/4" x 9 3/4". The stationery was pre-printed with "Department of the South" letterhead. The paper is in good sturdy condition, not stiff, and not delicate. Very little wear to edges and corners. Creases where originally folded. Docketed on reverse.
