Item #SQ4332393

Here is a nice Civil War CDV. The image features Union General Ormsby Mitchel. On the reverse is the back mark of D. Appleton & Co, Broadway, New York.

The CDV measures 2 1/2" x 4" and is in excellent condition as shown.

Ormsby Mitchel held various commands in the Western Theater of the Civil War. He commanded the Department of the Ohio early in the war, at which time he and James Andrews worked out plans to attack Chattanooga while also disrupting a southern railway by stealing a train further south in Georgia. While a failure, the incident became known as the Great Locomotive Chase. Mitchel later held a divisional command in the Army of the Ohio, captured Huntsville, Alabama, without casualties, and earned a Major General's commission for his efforts. In late 1862 he assumed command of the 10th Corps in South Carolina, but died of yellow fever shortly thereafter.
