Item No. 9831548

Offered here is an interesting 1880 letter written and signed by Civil War General Fitz John Porter to a "Mr. Steele." Porter, who during the war was court martialed for his conduct at the Second Battle of Bull Run, spent much of the remaining years of his life attempting to clear his name. In full, the letter reads:

Washington DC
March 1st 1880

My dear Sir
Too the best I can to comply with your wishes and if not satisfactory, where I now younger I will try my hand at it again.
Yours Respectfully
Fitz John Porter

Mr Steele

The letter was written on a single stationery sheet measuring about 5" x 8 1/2". The paper is in good sturdy condition, not stiff, and not particularly delicate. Creased where originally folded.
