Item No. 2778312

An authentic 1846 autograph of William E. "Grumble" Jones, who fifteen years later would raise a company of the 1st Virginia Cavalry, fighting under JEB Stuart at First Manassas, and later become a general in the Confederate Army.  7 3/4" x 2 1/2" short note in Jones's hand, in which a debt of $35 was owed to Colonel G.W. Hopkins. It is witnessed by another officer whose name I couldn't quite make out--William Byars, perhaps? Jones's signature is a rare one. See Heritage Auctions June 2015 Civil War auction lot #47300 for a good comparison between signatures.
