Item No. 1935576

An interesting early-war letter written by Sergeant Henry S. Figures of the 4th Alabama Infantry to his father back home. Figures described the regiment’s voyage from Richmond to Yorktown, described as a difficult march for the men, but one that Figures missed due to illness, arriving instead by train. The most interesting part of the letter describes the results of the regiment’s election of field and company officers, remarking that future Confederate general Evander Law was elected colonel, with Owen K. McLemore, a major in the 14th Alabama, elected lieutenant colonel. Several other company officers and NCOs were then mentioned, including Thomas J. Goldsby, Gustavus B. Mastin, W. W. Leftwich, Orlando Halsey, James H. Brown, Milton E. Croxton, Andrew J. Byrnes, William Fariss, and Watkins Harris. The letter reads:

Yorktown Va
April 22nd 1861

My dear Papa
The regiment left Ashland last monday week. Those who were not able to go were left behind. I was one of those who could not march. We staid there three days & then took the cars & went to Richmond, where I saw all my old acquaintances. we left next morning for this place. we took the cars at Richmond for West Point. there took a schooner & got here, fatigued & very sleepy & hungry at dark. We slept in an old house that night. next evening the regiment got here, so we came out to it. They had a very hard march about eighty miles. I would have went with them but I had the diarrhea, so I was too week to go. I am perfectly well now. We have been here for several days. yesterday Gen [William H. C.] Whiting ordered an election to be held for company & regimental officers (you have heard by this time that the conscript bill has passed & we are in for two years) [Evander] Law is Col. [Owen K.] McLemore (Major of 14 Ala) is Lt Col. He beat [Thomas J.] Goldsby. [Gustavus B.] Mastin is Capt. W. Leftwich is 1st Lieut. Orlando Halsey is 2d Lieut. [James H.] Brown 3d Lieut. none of the old Lieuts was elected. [Milton E.] Croxton is Orderly Sergt. [Andrew J.] Byrnes 2d & I am 3rd Sergt. Willie Fariss is 3 Corpl.
