Item No. 8193388

A nice military pass dated June 22, 1863, written out by Lieutenant Stephen S. Stevens of the 6th Connecticut Infantry, who would be killed less than a month later at the Second Battle of Fort Wagner. With a heading of “Headquarters, U.S. Forces / Hilton Head, S.C.,” the pass grants permission to “Mr. J. G. Richardson (Trader) and Friends to visit St. Helena Island until July 15th 1863.” Lieutenant Stevens signed by order of Colonel John L. Chatfield, whose name is printed on the pass. Chatfield would be wounded at Fort Wagner and died in early August.

The pass measures about 7 1/2” x 5” and is in excellent condition with minor toning and creases where originally folded.
