A signed vignette CDV view of Samuel S. Jessop, who served during the Civil War as an army surgeon in the Western Theater. Jessop poses in civilian clothing and signed “Yours truly / Sam S. Jessop.” On the reverse is the imprint of photographer Powelson & Co. of Detroit, Michigan. The image was part of an album assembled by Colonel Bernard J. D. Irwin, the noted army surgeon, naturalist, and Medal of Honor recipient. Irwin and Jessop may have known each other later in the war when Irwin was in command of Army hospitals at Memphis, Tennessee. The carte measures about 2 1/2” x 4”.
