Item No. 3854273

A very nice signed CDV view of Captain Horace G. White of the 94th New York Volunteers, who was wounded and captured July 1, 1863 at the Battle of Gettysburg—one of 245 casualties the regiment suffered that day, the costliest of its war service. After being captured, White spent time at Libby Prison and other prisons in Georgia and South Carolina. In this very clear image, the Captain is seated and wears a dark blue frock coat and dark blue trousers. There is a black mourning ribbon tied around his upper arm. On the reverse is the backmark of Washington photographer John Holyland (at his pre-1865 Pennsylvania Ave. address). It is signed “Yours Truly / H. G. White / Capt. Co. A 94th / N. Y. V.” Very good condition with minor toning. Measures about 2 1/2” x 4”. Comes with approximately 20 pages of reproduced documents from the National Archives having to do with White’s service.
