CDV of Union General Alexander Asboth in Traditional Hungarian Uniform
Item No. 9152884
A CDV portrait of Brigadier General Alexander Asboth, depicted here in what appears to be a traditional Hungarian-style uniform. The image bears the imprint of E. & H. T. Anthony of New York on the reverse. It was part of a family album assembled by Bernard J. D. Irwin, the noted army surgeon, naturalist, and Medal of Honor recipient. The carte has been trimmed down to about 2 1/8” x 3 1/4”.
Asboth, a Hungarian-born soldier and engineer, took part in the Hungarian Revolution of 1848 before emigrating to the United States. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he joined the Union Army and rose to the rank of brigadier general, serving under John C. Frémont in the Western Theater. He later commanded a division at the Battle of Pea Ridge and was severely wounded at the Battle of Marianna, Florida, in 1864.
