Item No. 5813677

An intersting August 1864 letter written by a member of the 40th Wisconsin Volunteers, a 100-day regiment that did garrison duty in Memphis. The author signed as “H.C.P.” and could possibly be Corporal Horace C. Penson of Company I. As the regiment was nearing the end of its enlistment, the talk around camp concerned when they would go home to Wisconsin. The letter reads:

Head Quarters 40th R. W.V.
Memphis Aug 29th 1864

Brother George,
I received your letter all right and was glad to hear that you were getting along so well and hope that you will continue in the same strain. We are all talking about going home now, but how long before we go still remains a secret. The Col. thinks that we shall start this week Thursday. If we do we shall be in old Wisconsin next week. The weather is very hot at present and the mosquitoes are awful thick, and the way they bite is some. A great many of the boys are sick. I think that about one third of them are sick and excused from duty. And they have furloughed about 20 already and it tickled the poor fellows the biggest kind. There was four from our Co. and there are 50 more from the Reg. that had aught to be sent home immediately. There is nothing of any importance in the line of news and I can’t think of anything to write this morning for the reason that I have not been up long enough to get waked up all over, and so I must close by sending my regards to all.
Yours as ever.
H.C.P.

The letter was written upon three pages of a stationery sheet measuring about 5” x 7 3/4”. It is in excellent condition with minor toning. Creased where originally folded.
