Archive of Documents and Album of 10 Photographs Relating to Sergeant Warren French, 11th Massachusetts Battery & 42nd Massachusetts

Item No. 9701432

A wonderful collection relating to Sergeant Warren French, who served in both the 11th Massachusetts Battery and the 42nd Massachusetts Volunteers. Included are a small album of ten images and four documents. The 4 1/4” x 5 1/4” album lists French’s name and militia unit, followed by ten images. The first three are CDV-size tintypes of postwar cavalrymen with sabers and plumed helmets. The man in the third image displays a GAR badge on his breast. The next three images are CDVs featuring French. In the first he is seated at a table with another officer, both wearing gauntlets and holding swords. The next CDVs are the same image of French with his sword standing next to a small table displaying his hat with crossed artillery emblem. The first of these is in better condition and has some very nice tinting. A CDV of an unidentified artilleryman follows. The final three images are also of French. The first is a CDV-size tintype showing French in uniform displaying his GAR medals. The second, also a CDV-size tintype, features French in civilian clothing. The final image is a CDV of French, also in civilian clothes. A very nice little album containing six images of the same man!

The collection also includes four documents pertaining to French’s service:

  1. Commonwealth of Massachusetts warrant appointing French a sergeant in the artillery of the Massachusetts Militia. It is dated August 26, 1862, and signed by a militia general P. L. Davis. Measures about 12 3/4” x 8 1/2”. Creased where folded.

  2. French’s federal discharge from the 11th Massachusetts Battery, dated May 29, 1863, and signed by the Battery’s Captain Edward Jenkins Jones as well as Lieutenant Robert P. McKibbin of the 4th US Infantry, the mustering officer. The document measures about 11” x 8 1/4” and has mild foxing and toning. Creased where originally folded.

  3. Boston Light Artillery discharge for French, dated September 8, 1863. Signed by the Battery’s Captain Edward Jenkins Jones and Sergeant George W. Sanborn. It measures about 10 1/2” x 8 1/2” with creases where folded.

  4. A January 1864 letter written to Massachusetts Governor John Andrew by Captain Edward Jenkins Jones recommending French for a commission in one of the new batteries coming into service. Despite French’s service with the 11th Battery as well as his prewar Militia service, it appears French did not receive the commission. However, French did receive a captain’s commission in the 100-days 42nd Massachusetts later in 1864. The letter was written on two pages. It measures about 5 1/4” x 8 1/4” and is in excellent condition. Jones’s letter reads:

    Boston January 2nd 64

    To His Excellency
John A. Andrew Governor of Mass.

Governor I am informed Mr. Warren French of Boston is an applicant for commission as lieutenant in some one of the light battery or regiments of heavy artillery, and with pleasure I have the honor to inform your Excellency that Mr. French served as a sergeant in the 11th Mass Battery during the 9 months service to my entire satisfaction and I regard him as one of the best light artillery officers known to me. His experience in the Militia of the Commonwealth is considerable and at one time was Major of the 2nd regiment and he is regarded as an excellent officer by those conversant with his military experience and well worthy of promotion.

I have the honor to be your Excellency’s obt servt
    Edward J. Jones
    Capt 11th Mass Battery
