Item No.

An interesting October 1864 telegram from Captain Edward S. Allen of the Quartermaster’s Department in Washington to Colonel Perley Peabody Pitkin, Chief Quartermaster for the State of Vermont (formerly regimental quartermaster of the 2nd Vermont Volunteers), then working in the Army of the Potomac quartermaster department. Allen inquired about the status of a vessel, the steamer California. It reads:

Telegram

Washn Oct 19 1864

Col Pitkin
CQM

If the California is with you please order her to report to me at once answer.

Q. S. Allen
Capt AQM

The telegram was written on a portion of a stationery sheet measuring about 7 3/4” x 5”. Very minor toning. Creased where originally folded.
