Item No. 7090001

A nice postwar muster roll for Company F, 55th New York National Guard dated October 12, 1868. It lists XX men present for duty with Captain Christian Vogel in command. Vogel had been an officer in the 11th and 54th New York Regiments during the Civil War. Jacob Muller is listed as first lieutenant (55th New York during Civil War). There are three officers, five sergeants, four corporals, two musicians, and fifty-two privates on the roll, with details about when and where they were enrolled, their recruiting officer, number of drills attended, and more. Major Obediah F. Wentworth is listed as the inspecting officer, with a signature on the reverse. Additional details on the reverse include that the men had last been issued state uniforms in 1867, equipment was from 1866, they were armed with Springfield rifles in 1866, that the Company maintained an armory in New York City, they drilled twice each month, and were drilled using Casey’s tactics.

The document is in very good condition with minor tears at several of the folds. It has been reinforced across the entire center fold with document tape, though only some minor separation seems to have occurred there before the reinforcing tape. Very little toning. It measures about 28” x 20”.
