A rare copy of General Orders No. 96, dated April 15, 1863, which assigned officers to command of the various corps in Major General Joseph Hooker’s Army of the Potomac. The order was issued just two weeks prior to the disaster at Chancellorsville. It reads:

By direction of the President, the following assignments are made of Army Corps Commanders:

1st Corps, Major General John F. Reynolds
2nd Corps, Major General D. N. Couch
3rd Corps, Major General D. E. Sickles
5th Corps, Major General G. G. Meade
6th Corps, Major General John Sedgwick
11th Corps, Major General O. O. Howard
12th Corps, Major General H. W. Slocum
Cavalry Corps, Major General George Stoneman

By order of the Secretary of War:

E. D. Townsend
Assistant Adjutant General

The order measures about 4 1/4” x 7” and was cut at an unusual angle along its left margin. It is in excellent condition with minor toning.
