March 1865 Drill Schedule for 105th Pennsylvania Signed by All Ten Company Commanders

An interesting 1865 regimental order from Major James Miller establishing drill schedules for the 105th Pennsylvania Veteran Volunteers, a regiment in the Army of the Potomac’s 2nd Corps. It was written out by the regiment’s adjutant, Lieutenant Hillis McKown. It set times for company and battalion drills in Casey’s Tactics, and indicated that drills wouldn’t be held on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons. On the reverse is a complete listing of the ten companies with the signature of its commanding officer (see list at bottom). The order was written on a sheet of lined paper measuring about 12 1/2” x 8”. Excellent condition with light toning and foxing. Creased where folded. The order reads:

Head Quarters 105th Penn. V. V.
March 1st 1865

Circular
In accordance with he provisions of the accompanying Circular from Head Quarters 2d Brigade, 3d Div., 2d A. C. dated Feb. 28th 1865, Drills will be resumed in the Regmt. Company commanders will give their personal attention to see that their men are instructed according to Casey’s Tactics.

The Recruits in the several companies who have not been instructed in the manual of arms and the facings will report daily when drill call is sounded to Sergeant W. J. Kennedy, Co. “I” who has been appointed to drill Recruits.

The following hours will be observed for Drills.

Squad or Company Drills from 9 1/2 to 11 1/2 A.M.
Company or Battalion Drills from 1 1/2 to 3 1/2 P.M.
There will be no Drills on Wednesday or Saturday afternoons.
The Calls will be sounded from these Head Quarters
