ALS - Confederate General Daniel Ruggles Autograph Letter
ALS - Confederate General Daniel Ruggles Autograph Letter
Item No. 5516144
Offered here is an authentic autographed letter signed by Confederate Civil War general Daniel Ruggles, most famous as commander of a division at the Battle of Shiloh, where he assembled sixty-two cannon (dubbed "Ruggles's Battery) opposite the Federal-held "Hornet's Nest." Ruggles remained in the Western and Trans-Mississippi theaters for most of the remainder of the war. The letter reads, in full:
I have ordered
100 Mule Teams complete
from Memphis--30 have
come. Please order the
The letter is undated, but is likely from May 1862, after Shiloh, when Ruggles was in charge of depots under Braxton Bragg, and also prior to Memphis falling to Union forces that June.
The letter measures approximately 7 1/2" x 5" (there are many examples of other Ruggles letters written upon this short-size paper--perhaps done to conserve writing material). Paper is creased once across the middle from a previous fold. It is in very good condition, not stiff, but the paper is quite thin. Little wear to edges or corners. The paper has that "grainy" feel typical of Confederate paper. Some foxing and toning.
