Item No. 0235135

A nice September 1863 document signed by Union General Seth Williams, who served as Assistant Adjutant General of the Army of the Potomac from August 1861 to March 1864. The document is a special order directing that Brigadier General Henry E. Davies report to the Cavalry Corps’ commander, Alfred Pleasonton. Davies had received his brigadier’s star just two days before the drafting of this order. He would serve in the Cavalry Corps through the end of the war. The document reads:

Head-Quarters, Army of the Potomac,
September 18 1863

Special Orders,
No. 252.

[Extract.]

3. Brigadier General H. E. Davies, U.S. Volunteers, will report for assignment to Major General A. Pleasonton, Commanding Cavalry Corps.

By command of Major General Meade
S. Williams
Assistant Adjutant General.

A note at the bottom indicates this copy was intended for General Davies himself.

The document is in excellent condition and measures about 7 3/4” x 9 3/4”. There is some toning, particularly in the right margin. Minor edge wear. Creased where originally folded.
