Offered here is an interesting unmounted albumen image taken in 1864 by photographer John C. Browne. The image, taken near West Point, New York, features Union Civil War Generals Ambrose E. Burnside and Robert Anderson. The 7 1/4" x 5 1/4" image is accompanied by an 1898 autograph letter signed by Browne and written to a famous Lincoln scholar of the day, Ms. Ida Tarbell of Philadelphia. In the letter, Browne identifies himself as the photographer and describes the situation that led to the photo's creation, as well as a the humorous banter between Burnside and Anderson. The letter reads:

907 Clinton St
Philad'a April 7th 1898

My dear Miss Tarbell,
I send you a Photograph that I made in Sep 1864. This is a group of four persons. On the left Col Osbourne, next Gen'l A. E. Burnside, next Gen'l Robert Anderson (of Fort Sumter fame) behind Gen'l Anderson is W.H. Denning. The picture was taken at a small farm house opposite West Point.

Both Anderson & Burnside were much interested in examining the negative and after a close inspection by the latter, Anderson said, "There are no flies on your head this time Burney." This remark by Anderson was brushed out by the caricature of Burnside that represented his bald head covered with insects. After a pleasant chat the party drove to West Point and it was the last time I saw either of the distinguished officers.
