Item No. 1722645

This handwritten document is titled, “Inventory of the effects of Timothy Grannis, pvt of Co. E, 1st Regt Berdan’s U.S. Sharp Shooters, who died at Camp of Instruction, Washington, D.C., the 31st Jany, 1862.” It then lists thirty items belonging to Grannis, including a Colt revolver, a dirk knife, a spy glass, a valise, as well as a number of uniform items like an overcoat, trousers, forage cap, and trademarks of the Sharpshooters like leggings and a havelock hat. The document states that the items would be returned to Grannis’s father. It is signed twice by Captain William P. Austin of Company E as a copy evidently retained for company records.

Grannis was a 20-year-old resident of Claremont, New Hampshire, when he enlisted in the Sharpshooters in September 1861. The 1st and 2nd regiments would train over the next several months at the “Camp of Instruction” near Washington. Like a number of the men, Grannis became ill in the camp and died January 31, 1862.

The document measures about 8” x 12 1/2”, is in excellent condition with light toning, and is creased at the original folds.
