Pictured in this circa 1890 cabinet card is a young Massachusetts Militia sergeant. He wears a frock coat with a 9-button front and, wearing white gloves, he holds a rifle at shoulder-arms. Aroundhis waist is a leather belt with Massachusetts belt plate. A sheathed bayonet hangs from the belt. Atop his head is an 1881-pattern helmet with eagle plate. A letter “G” is affixed to the plate, but no regiment number is discernible. Stoneham, Massachusetts, photographer A. J. Nowell’s imprint appears at the bast of the mount. Excellent condition. Measures about 4 1/4” x 6 1/2”.
