1865 General Orders No. 50 — Army of the James — Court Martial of Assistant Surgeon Ernest Sallman, 5th Pennsylvania Cavalry

This printed general order was issued by the headquarters of the Union’s Army of the James. It is dated “Before Richmond” on March 24, 1865. The order gives details of two court martial cases. In the first case, Assistant Surgeon Ernest Sallman of the 5th Pennsylvania Cavalry was accused of conduct unbecoming an officer, as well as drunkenness. While acquitted of the former charge, the doctor was convicted on the drunkenness charge and was dismissed from the service. In the second case a citizen William Dawson was charged with aiding and abetting Union deserters. Dawson was found guilty and sentenced to pay a fine and one year hard labor, which was ordered served at Norfolk. The document measures about 5” x 8” and is in very good condition with light foxing and toning, as well as some light creasing in the paper.
