This printed general order was issued by the War Department in Washington, DC, on July 30, 1863. It states the details of four interesting court martial cases.

  1. Private Richard Green, 1st South Carolina Volunteers (Colored), who was charged with mutiny and disobedience of orders while on a detachment.

  2. Captain C. H. Nichols, 6th Connecticut Infantry, who went on a power trip while acting as provost marshal at Hilton Head.

  3. Private Lawrence Toney, 100th New York Infantry, who was accused of fleeing in the face of the enemy on Cole’s Island.

  4. Private Michael Duffy, 3rd Rhode Island Artillery, accused of drawing a knife on an officer and inflicting a dangerous wound on the man’s neck.

The 8-page document measures about 4 1/2” x 7 1/4”. Very good condition. The order was among an archive of documents from the brigade staff of the 3rd Brigade, 2nd Division, 3rd Corps, Army of the Potomac (archive of Col. Thomas H. Dunham, 11th Mass.). It is marked as having been received August 28, 1863.
