April 1862 Commissary Voucher Signed by Brigadier General John J. Peck — "The 4th Army Corps was ordered to move at daylight and the rations could not be had elsewhere"

$130.00

Item No. 8293584

This April 1862 commissary voucher indicates that a large quantity of commissary stores was transferred by Captain Nathaniel Ellmaker to Captain M. J. Green. General John J. Peck explains in a long signed endorsement on the reverse that because “the 4th Army Corps was ordered to move at daylight, and the rations could not be had elsewhere in time to meet the orders for an advance toward Yorktown,” it was necessary for the quantity of pork, bacon, salt beef, hard bread, beans, rice, and other stores to be “turned over to this Brigade” from the brigade of Brigadier General Lawrence P. Graham. Dated April 8, 1862, this took place right at the beginning of the Yorktown siege. General Peck’s signature follows his written comments.

The voucher measures about 8 1/2” x 11” and is in excellent condition with light foxing and toning. Creased at the original folds. The transcript of Peck’s endorsement follows:

Head Quarters Peck’s Brigade
Camp near Warwick River Va

Capt. M. J. Green, Brigade Commissary, will receipt for the commissary stores mentioned within, which were turned over to this Brigade from Gen. Graham’s Brigade by Captain Ellmaker, his Brigade Commissary, on the evening of the 3d of April, 1862, by his consent and received by my order. The 4th Army Corps was ordered to move at daylight, and the rations could not be had elsewhere in time to meet the orders for an advance toward Yorktown.
